FISHERIES REPORT by Pete Viall

1. Pike Stocking

Thanks to the S:POA, pike have been stocked in Spider Lake.  As voted at the annual meeting last summer, funds were allocated (approximately $2300) to the fisheries committee to obtain pike for stocking.  After appropriate permits were obtained from the DNR, approximately 450 northern pike ranging in size from 10 to 18 inches, were purchased from Imlay City Fish Farm.  Those fish were released at the public launch in early November,  Committee members then monitored the shoreline for any dead pike during the next number of days. Fortunately there was no significant die-off following the planting.  The shoreline was then rechecked after ice out to assure no significant winterkill.  Again, fortunately, no significant numbers of pike were found.  Thanks to  Jim Reed  for organizing the stocking.  In that these pike were stocked as a management tool ( in order to decrease the number of small bass)  the fisheries committee is strongly encouraging catch and release of all northern pike.  The committee is in the process of getting approval to post signs at the public launch encouraging catch and release.  Information will also be forwarded to the resorts on the lake.

2.  Catch and Release

It is important to limit, as much as possible, any stress on a fish you are planning to release.  Ways to accomplish this include:

a. Land the fish as quickly as possible,  Do not "play out" the fish.

b. Try to leave the fish in the water as much as you are able.

c.  If you have to use a landing net, keep the net in the water while unhooking the fish.

d.  If you have to take the fish out of the water (i.e. picture) only keep the fish out of the water as long as you can hold your breath.

e.  Have your tools (pliers etc.) ready

f. never grab a fish by its gills

g. Consider barbless hooks if you plan on releasing your catch  You can accomplish this by pushing down the barbs of your hooks with pliers.

h. Consider changing from treble hooks to a larger single hook..  Sometimes after a prolonged fight, especially in hot weather, a fish needs to be revived.  To accomplish this gently cradle the fish by its belly with one hand, with the other gently grasp the fish by its tail.  Move the boat slowly forward to force water over its gills until the fish is easily  able to swim away, upright, under its own power.

j.  Never immobilize a pike by grabbing its eyes.  This will kill the fish.

k.  Spread the word that the SLPOA encourages catch and release of pike.

3.  Future Plans

If there is enough interest, the fisheries committee is planning a "fun fishing tournament" and potluck dinner later this summer.  Further details will be announced at the annual meeting.  If anyone has any interesting fishing news or is interested in joining the fisheries committee, please contact Pete Viall (946-5150) or any member of the committee.
