A state-wide program to monitor lakes and streams is underway in Michigan...  with partnerships between lake associations and High School Science Departments.

The program began in Year 2001.   Initially, Nine High School Science Departments were chosen to monitor selected lakes.  Since that time, the program has expanded each year through the addition of more high school/lake association partnerships in the lake monitoring program.  In addition, the program has expanded to include a stream monitoring component.    The program will be expanding further to include lake and stream testing for E-Coli bacteria.  Grant funds from the Irwin Andrew Porter and Toshiba America Foundations were secured to conduct the programs.
