The Michigan Environmental Council and the Detroit Free Press cosponsored a photo-essay contest to help raise awareness of environmental problems and possible solutions.  Readers, in three different age groups, were asked to find innovative ideas to help make the world a better, cleaner place, and to document these ideas in a photograph and short essay.  Winners earned cash prizes and the Barbara Stanton Environmental Award of Excellence, named for the retired Free Press editorial writer and environmental champion.
