A state-wide program to monitor lakes and streams is underway in Michigan...  with partnerships between lake associations and High School Science Departments.

The program began in Year 2001.   Initially, Nine High School Science Departments were chosen to monitor selected lakes.  Since that time, the program has expanded each year through the addition of more high school/lake association partnerships.  In addition, the program has expanded to include a stream monitoring component and lake and stream testing for E-Coli bacteria.  Grant funds from the Irwin Andrew Porter and Toshiba America Foundations were secured to conduct the programs.

Local High Schools and Lake Associations Work Together to Monitor the Water Quality in Michigan's Lakes and Streams.

The Project...

Our Mission:   Partnering concerned riparians with local high school students in an effort to promote environmental awareness and quality testing of local waterways.

Our Goal:  Creating a partnership between lake association members and local high school students and providing the students with the opportunity to work along side community members who care about the lakes and streams being tested.

Project Focus...
  • To Be Technology Driven

  • To Be Community Driven
  • To Be Educationally Strong!

This project could never have been implemented without generous gifts from several Foundations and Companies that provided the opportunity for a teacher to dream.

To each of the following, a Special Thank You is offered by all involved in the project:

Thanks to the MLSA for hosting this project.

Thanks also to Randy Cook and Jeff Kalember-- the teachers responsible for developing and running the lake and stream monitoring projects and turning them into successes.
