A state-wide
program to monitor lakes and streams in Michigan...
The High School/Lake Association partnership program began in Year 2001.
At the start of the program,
nine
High School Science Departments were chosen to monitor selected lakes.
Since that time, the program has expanded each year through the addition of more
high school/lake association partnerships and the addition of stream monitoring
and E-Coli monitoring to the program.

E-Coli
Testing:
|
Randy Cook, a
teacher from Tri-County High School, directs the lake and E-Coli monitoring
programs under the administration of the
Michigan Lake and Stream Associations (ML&SA).
Mr. Cook wrote the grants to acquire the equipment and has authored the
text/manuals used for the programs.
|
| In an effort to make
sure that the High School/Lake Association project is a well rounded
educational activity that is concerned with all areas of water quality, a
microbial aspect of testing for E-Coli and fecal coliform bacteria was added
to the program.
Coming soon
--a complete testing manual that includes correlation to science standards,
information about E-Coli that can be used in the classroom as an easy to
read and understand text, and a comprehensive lab guide explaining proper
collection techniques and how to read the media for E.-Coli and coliform
colony enumeration. When available, the manual will be posted on this
web site. |
A grant from the
Waksman Foundation allowed 10 schools to participate in the initial E.-Coli
testing with Petrifilm E.-Coli/coliform count plates being provided for the
initial testing.
