Rose Lake Property Owners Association
Minutes of Spring Meeting – May 28, 2011

The meeting opened at 9:00 a.m. by President Matt Roda. He welcomed everyone and reminded them to sign up for the 50/50 drawing and to pay dues if not already done. Matt thanked Bob Schaffsma for hosting the meeting. The officers present and area coordinators were also introduced. The Secretary’s report and the Treasurer’s report were accepted as presented.

Eugene Cryderman conducted the election of new officers. Nominations were open from the floor. No new nominations were presented. Officers elected were: Vice-President – Eugene Cryderman; Treasurer – Donna Thompson; Area 1 Coordinator – Cathy Lindstrom; Area 3 – John Covert. Officers elected were thanked for running by President Matt Roda.

Committee reports were given. Don Johnson reported for the Fish Committee. The DNR has disinfected walleye eggs from the virus so they are growing fingerlings again. Rose Lake is on a high priority list to receive fingerlings and should get them this year. Don’s cottage is for sale and if he sells, a new Fish Committee chairman will need to be appointed.

Ron Thompson reported for the Parks Committee. There is a new manager at Rose Lake Park and he and his wife were in attendance at the meeting. People have reported seeing at least two pair of loons on the lake this spring.

Carol Paalman reported for the Entertainment Committee that the July 4th parade will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 4, at the southeast end of the lake by Robell’s. This year numbers for boats will be handled differently. Carol requests boaters get their numbers early from her or Donna Thompson so it will be easier than passing them out in the wind. They will have the numbers at the start of the parade if people aren’t able to get them ahead of time. Deputy Salinas was present and agreed to lead the parade if he is on the lake, barring an emergency. Cathy Lindstrom has agreed to judge and Carol asked for two additional judges. Judging stand will be at Lindstrom’s. There will be prizes for best decorated again this year. It was suggested the park put out a flyer to let campers know when the boat parade will be. The Popsicle drop will be held on Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m. Carol asked for volunteers to help distribute the Popsicles, preferably one pontoon and runners for each area of the lake. The fundraiser picnic for the Rose Lake Youth Camp has not been well attended in the last couple of years, so the committee has decided to cancel it. The Association will continue to donate $500 to the camp and it is suggested we sell shirts and hats with our logo on it as a fundraiser. Carol expressed thanks and appreciation for all the time Donna Thompson puts into the activities. It was suggested we have a flyer about the association to pass out with Popsicles. Eugene Cryderman’s wife is working on the shirts and hats and will display them at the County Park for people to buy. Diana Bourne is in charge of the golf outing which will be held Saturday, August 27, at the Rose Golf Course. It will be a two person scramble beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. which includes 9 holes, cart and lunch for $22 per person plus prizes. She passed out flyers and encouraged everyone to attend. Donna will put a reminder in the next newsletter. Diana encouraged people to call her ahead to reserve the number of people. Golfers can pay the day of the outing to the Rose.

Rick Paalman reported for the Township Advisory Board that 22 acres were treated last year for Eurasian water milfoil which was down in acres treated for 209. When the lake is being treated, an e-mail will be sent to lake residents who we have an e-mail address. He requested those that haven’t sent their e-mail address to the advisory board to please do so that they can keep residents updated. Advisory Board member e-mails are in the newsletter. Treatment will also be posted on the shore. The weed survey is scheduled for Thursday, June 2, weather permitting. In addition to 2-4-D, Renovate OTF will be used as a systemic herbicide. Progressive AE does the survey and Professional Lake Management will do the application. The first treatment will be later in June. The harvested weeds will still be taken in at the Paalman property. Rick announced that two positions on the advisory board are up for election this year. He reminded anyone interested to contact Township member Kevin Draper for an application by early July. Matt and Rick attended the Michigan Lakes and Streams conference in April and learned of new invasive species in Michigan. A question about using weevils was asked and it was agreed by most that it was not very successful in the past on Rose Lake. Rick reminded members that next year will be time to approve the assessment for another five years. Mike McGarry commented that the board is always under budget for the annual cost.

Under old business, Matt introduced Andy Hest, the program director at Springhill Camp, and encouraged members to ask questions. Andy explained the three accidents reported last year were slight injuries of tubers, and that as a precaution, EMS was called. There were no serious injuries. Andy introduced Matt, leader of water activities. The camp workers use the boats on Saturdays. He stated that safety is the camp’s number one concern. If there are questions or concerns, Andy asked that you call him at 231-734-2616.

Other old business Matt discussed was the Waterfront Alliance legal fund we donated to last year after haring a talk by Art Robell. The Alliance returned our $500 because the fund wasn’t yet established. Motion made by Mike McGarry and seconded to become members of the Alliance for $100. Motion carried. Dick Thompson moved RLPOA also donate $400 to the legal fund. Motion seconded and passed. Matt doesn’t anticipate that we donate to the legal fund annually, but do become annual members of the alliance. There was discussion about having a boat wash area at the park. Matt said the DEQ and DNR are not supportive of that because unless everyone uses it, it is not effective to keep from introducing invasive species to Rose Lake.

Under new business, Gary Lewis of 15426 Elm volunteered to host the fall meeting. Bourne’s will host next spring’s meeting. Matt would like to see some of the meetings at the Youth Camp and will look into that.

Matt announced Michigan Lakes and Streams has a program we can use to send samples in for water quality monitoring. He asked for volunteers and that training is available at the MLSA conference. Alger Gustafson did clarity tests for 10 years and feels we don’t need to do it because the lake is in good condition. When he did it, Rose Lake was consistently in the upper third of Michigan lakes for clarity and has improved since then. Matt asked for members to give the testing consideration.

New residents and members of the association were introduced and welcomed by Matt. Grand Rapids Pest Control representative gave a presentation. Spider treatment for under 2000 square feet of home starts at $40. Mosquito spray is offered by acreage beginning at $45 and ant control is also available. Neighbors of people who newsletters were returned for incorrect addresses volunteered to pass them on.

Members and especially Jim Samec’s daughter commented and thanked Matt for the nice article after Jim’s passing. It was also noted that longtime lake resident Jack Hekker passed on in January. Members asked of anyone knew of someone who would put boats in for people like Jim had done. Eugene Cryderman reminded members to let the board know if someone passes or moves away.

Deputy Salinas asked for questions about his area of enforcement and laws. Because of cutting of state funds, he said he may not be patrolling late in the season. He stressed that his biggest concern is for safety.

It was suggested that we be more aware and considerate of lighting on the lake. Mercury vapor lights produce a large glare, especially across the lake where high pressure sodium lights are soft lights without the glare and also cost less to operate. At one time the park had shades on their lights, provided by RLPOA and they are no longer there and glare a lot. Matt agreed to address the lighting issue in the newsletter.

Matt reminded members of the donation box for the July 4 fireworks. Comments were made on types of permits needed for fireworks. The 50/50 drawing was won by Eugene Cryderman with half of the $55 going to him.
