Bartlett's Resort, Pleasant Lake,
Mich.
1/5/2007
A Resort has been at the Pleasant Lake
location since approximately 1917 when P. T. Crum leased "Tom
Whitney's" cow pasture according to an article in the Jackson Citizen
Patriot who interviewed a long time resident Fred Baldwin who owned and
operated a popcorn stand for over 40 years. It was purchased by Hugh
Bartlett in 1920 and he operated it during the Big Band years when it was
one of Jackson's most popular gathering places. It was then purchased by
Maynard B. Walker in 1952 until Gene Davis bought Bartlett's in 1968. The
best years were 1948 thru 1962 according to Davis when high school and
college youngsters attended Bartlett's Pavilion. Approximately 2000 to
4000 visited a week. The Big Bands that came were Harry James, Vaughn
Monroe, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Russ Morgan, Betty Hutton, Les Brown,
and the Glenn Miller band. In 1970 fire broke out on September 25th, fire
had also burnt a similar structure to the ground in 1930. Mr. Davis stated
he hoped to rebuild but doubted if they could replace what they had. Mr.
Davis sold Bartlett's in 1976 to the Glinsky family that operated it as a
restaurant and bar. It was closed approximately 4 years ago and tore down
in the fall of 2006 to make way for new homes to be built. At present one
home is under construction and should be finished in the spring. Other
homes are planned. |
