This year we are again offering our Boating Safety Class. This is your opportunity to become certified in the safe operation of a powerboat and other types of boating. Leave your name, phone number and the number of people that will be attending. There will be a charge of $5.00 which includes the cost of lunch.

You will need your Social Security Number in order to issue your Boating Safety Certificate that will be issued that day by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department.

If you where born after December 31, 1978, you are required to have a Boating Safety Certificate.

There is a whole set of regulations regarding the use of personal watercraft.  Three significant ones are listed below:

bullet

A person who is 12 but less than 14 may operate a personal watercraft if he or she obtained a boating safety certificate before January 1, 1999.

bullet

Persons born after December 31, 1978 shall not operate a personal watercraft unless they obtain a boating safety certificate.

bullet

The operators of a personal watercraft must carry their boating safety certificate and display it upon the demand of a peace officer.

The owner of any watercraft will be held liable for anyone that he/she lets use that machine, regardless of age. It is presumed that a watercraft is being operated with the knowledge and consent of the owner. When your kids bring over a friend to go boating or jet skiing, it is your responsibility to see that they have taken a class and have a BSC on their person.  It would be wise for all teens to attend this class, even if they already have their BSC and driver's license.  Watercraft have unique handling properties and 86% of those who drowned in a boating accident were not wearing a life jacket.
