If you're starting to think of buying gifts for the upcoming holidays, consider s bird book. Many nature lovers get great satisfaction from identifying t he different species that inhabit our lake area. Since I moved to the lake in 2001 I’ve made a point to identify every bird I’ve seen. This is a year round activity, as we have local residents and migratory species as well
Did you know the Great Blue Heron comes as early as the second week of March and stays till the snow flies? Did you know we have Green Herons? Did you know we have early visits from the Loons, Puffleheads, Ruddys, Goldeneyes, Coots and Woody’s (those are ducks)? Have you seen our resident flock of turkey vultures? If you haven’t heard the magnificent Sandhill Cranes that inhabit the surrounding area, you’re missing out. These gigantic birds make quite a racket during mating season and create quite the show.
By putting out a bird feeder this next month you will begin to attract a bunch of feathered friends to watch all winter. You will be amazed at the variety of birds you can attract. We have a great opportunity to watch Mother Nature in our own backyards and a good bird book will enhance our enjoyment. If you really want to make your “significant other” excited, buy some nice binoculars, who knows you may even join the Audubon Society.
