Riparian Rights In Michigan Inland Lakes & Streams Riparian rights are enjoyed only on land which abuts a natural water course. Those rights are of two kinds, natural and correlative. Natural rights include those uses "necessary for the existence of the riparian proprietor and his family, such as to quench thirst and for household uses". Correlative rights "are those which merely increase one's comfort and prosperity and do not rank as essential to his existence, such as commercial profit and recreation".* Correlative rights must be reasonable at all times and cannot encroach or infringe unreasonably upon the use of the surface of the lake or stream by other riparians and members of the public.
