Highlights from the Fall Meeting October 19, 2004 at Murray Lake Elementary

The MLA continues to look a ways to protect and monitor the quality of the water in our lake. We currently are testing the water measuring clarity, dissolved oxygen and phosphorus levels with the Michigan Lakes & Streams program. We have years of testing records which can help us spot changes in the water from year to year. There are two areas we are looking at expanding this effort.

The first is joining with the Lowell Schools. We are looking at working with them to purchase a much more sophisticated probe tied to a computer program which would give us additional measurements of the water quality. We would be able to add this to the existing data and begin to build a benchmark of additional standards for our water quality.

Secondly, we had a presentation from Professional Lake Management. They have been treating the lake for weed growth and feel it is time for us to consider a full lake treatment. They presented the facts as to what can be done and how and a cost estimate. We will continue to gather facts and educate ourselves as the pros and cons of this. They don't anticipate being able to do anything until 2006 or 2007 so we have time to explore the different options.
