Have your Vessel Inspected by the USCG on Lake Ponemah this spring It’s free and it can lower your boat insurance rates!!!!
5/16/2009 11-2pm at the Lake Ponemah Public boat launch. Uniformed Officers will be stationed on Lake Ponemah performing courtesy marine exams and vessel safety checks (VSC’s). VSC’s can be administered to boats of any size on the water or on trailers.
The U.S. Coast Guard recommends that all recreational boaters (including personal watercraft users) take advantage of the free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program every year. The Vessel Safety Check on Lake Ponemah will be offered by experienced members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons®, two of the nation’s premier volunteer boating safety organizations. A VSC is your best way of learning about problems that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the water this summer.
Vessels which pass the USCG examination will receive the 2009 VSC decal shown above for their boat and/or watercraft. Owners are also encouraged to send a copy of the completed certification to their watercraft insurance agent. Typically rates are reduced by 10%-12%
Bring your questions. The USCG is available to help with State and Federal boating questions. For additional information and to determine if your vessel would pass the VSC before you have one, visit the US Coast Guard VSC website at: http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/vsc.htm
Please note: This is a courtesy inspection. If the boat fails to meet one or more items - NO tickets or Law Enforcement action takes place during this process.
Here is what the USCG will be looking for during the Vessel Safety Check: 1. Display of MC numbers - ie spacing, block letters, and contrasting color 2. Registration - copy of registration for the boat 3. Life Jackets - 1 for each seat on boat; type I, II, or III PLUS 1 throwable device. All must be Coast Guard approved and readily accessible 4. Visual Distress Signals - hand held non-aerial flares not outdated. Not a legal requirement for inland lakes BUT is required to receive decal 5. Fire Extinguishers - Marine type - mounted in bracket & charged 6. Ventilation - Bilge blowers working if boat so equipped 7. Backfire Flame Arrestor - (air cleaner) - marine type only, clean, fits tight 8. Sound Signal device - horn working OR able to produce a sound signal 9. Nav Lights - working red, green, and white lights 10. No Oil/Gas Discharge placard mounted in engine space (for inboards & I/Os) 11. No Plastic or Trash Discharge placard (for boats 26ft or larger) 12. No Oil or Gas in bilge / Bilge pump working 13. Battery Covers on one post on each battery 14. Portable Gas Cans Secured in place - not able to slide around 15. No other obvious hazards or defects
Benefits for getting your boats and watercraft inspected:
A. Reducing the insurance premium on average from 10-12% B. Reducing chance of Law Enforcement inspection by the DNR, Sheriff, or active duty Coast Guard C. Decal is recognized State and Nation-wide in case boat is trailered to another body of water D. Decal is good for the balance of the calendar year awarded. |
