Recent Media Coverage Regarding Ponemah, Squaw and Tupper Lake

The Fenton Township board has approved the special assessment district to cover the cost of Lake Ponemah channel improvements.  These improvements include dredging the mouth of the channel which leads out to Lake Ponemah.  The board adopted the resolution Monday 4/6/2009 unanimously.

The $51,350 project includes dredging and widening the mouth which leads directly into Lake Ponemah.  The work is expected to begin after July 4th and take approximately two weeks to complete.

Stay tuned to this site for additional information as it become available.  Many thanks to all who have put in the extra hours to get the project to where it is today.

FENTON TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Resident Joe Runci was all smiles as he stood Monday before the Board of Trustees. He has his lucky stars and three "guardian angels" to thank for it.

Runci was duck hunting on the icy Lake Ponemah waters Nov. 30 when his boat capsized, throwing him -- fully dressed in hunting gear -- into the frigid waters. Luckily for Runci, his overturned boat caught the attention of three other hunters who had taken to Lake Ponemah that morning -- township residents Brent Venable and Howard Schrock, and former township resident Glen Venable. The three men also attended Monday's meeting.

"Howard (Schrock) or Brent (Venable) noticed a boat upside down in the water and said 'Somebody's in the water!'" Glen Venable recalled. "We knew the water was very cold. There was ice on the entire lake and we broke ice all the way out to where we fished."

Brent Venable jumped into the water to unhook the anchors and the trio fired up the motor and headed the estimated 300-400-yard distance to where Runci lay in the water.

When they got to Runci, his entire body was submerged except for his face. Schrock pulled him out of the water and into their boat and the group proceeded to Schrock's home where Runci was undressed and bathed in hot water to battle hypothermia.

"We had no idea who it was who was in the water (at first). We pull up, and I picked him up and I pulled him in the boat. Now, Joe went to school with my daughters. The first thing that went through my mind was 'catch and release?'" Schrock joked.

Schrock and Glen and Brent Venable were recognized for their heroic efforts by the board of trustees, where they received a standing ovation from board and audience members for their quick thinking.

"We have some heroes in our township," township supervisor Bonnie Mathis said. "We're very lucky to have Joe Runci alive."

Despite the recognition, Glen Venable said he doesn't think there was anything heroic about what he helped do.

"Anybody out there would have done the same thing. We were fortunate enough to be in a position to see what happened. We just did what we had to do.

"I feel fortunate to have been there. It was probably the most gratifying experience of my life."

Frank's Tavern continues long run

by Ron Krueger | The Flint Journal

Monday November 24, 2008, 1:40 PM

I'm a little late with this, but there still may be a few souls who do not know that Jessica Begley and Rachel Hitchcock are the undisputed owners of 80-year-old Frank's Tavern not far from the shores of Lake Ponemah in Fenton Township.

Frank's regulars might have had reason to be concerned about the cozy restaurant's fate when longtime owner Steve Fessler filed for bankruptcy.

But longtime employees Begley and Hitchcock were just patiently waiting to take it over as proceedings followed their usual slow course.

Frank's has long been known for its fish and chips, baked haddock, cod and walleye, ribs and roast chicken.

In five of the six days, Begley and Hitchcock offer all-you-can-eat promotions.

It's pollack on Tuesdays; cod, perch, smelt or clams Wednesdays; froglegs Thursdays; crablegs Fridays and crablegs and cod, perch, smelt or clams again Sundays.

Winter hours are 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 5-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4-8 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant will be open for an hour later starting April 1.

Frank's is at 14331 Eastview Drive, off North Road.

Info Regarding Lake Level

CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF FENTON BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES FOR REGULAR MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2007

Per the Genesee County Drain Commissioner Jeff Wright

Lake Ponemah Lake Level

Supervisor Mathis asked about the established lake level for Lake Ponemah. Many

residents have complained that the level is too low this year. Commissioner Wright

stated that his office controls the level of the Linden Mill Pond, which affects the level of

Lake Ponemah. The level of the Linden Mill Pond was established by the courts several

decades ago. They must work within the established guidelines, which may result in

fluctuating levels in Lake Ponemah. Other factors, such as rainfall and the flow in the

Shiawassee River, will also impact the lake level.
