Hot Spot Areas

The 2005 Cladophora Study has been completed.  This study identifies 'Hot Spot' locations around the lakes where above normal levels of cladophora have been found.  These locations are then identified on a 'Hot Spot' map depicting various levels of the cladophora problem.  A total of 119 total samplings were taken.  Of this 119,  46 were found to be moderately high or higher indicating potential problem areas.  The GLA uses this information to work with property owners, in and around these 'Hot Spots', in an attempt to identify the source of the problem and recommends possible solutions.

As mentioned under Shoreline Management, if you are in a identified 'Hot Spot Area', you are encouraged to take a closer look at your particular area and attempt to discern any problems and correct them.  In some cases natural causes could be the source, however lawn fertilization, septic issues or other run off issues could also be the cause.  The solution may involve a number of your neighbors as well.  If you would like to see these maps please contact Mike Litch, Chairman of the Water Quality Committee (231-334-3612).  He will be happy to share this information with you.  If you have a problem piece of property, Mike may be able to provide the further assistance of Rob Karner, our resident biologist, to assist you.  Numerous Shoreline Naturalization projects were undertaken this summer.  Kudos to all involved.

This same cladophora analysis will be conducted next Summer(2006).
