Keepsake Shores

Call to order:  President Skip Youngblood called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. Sixty-three people signed in for the breakfast and meeting, it appears there were several people who did not sign in as well.

Skip Youngblood recognized all those who contributed to the breakfast and annual meeting.  John Tapper for donation of food, grills and cooking; High’s Marine for contribution of door prizes; Brian Hansen for printing of the June 28, 2003 Annual Meeting Minutes and the 2004 Agenda and Financial Report, along with a grill for preparing the breakfast and cooking; Keepsake Shores for use of their lake access site; Pat and Mary Cummings for electricity to keep the coffee hot that Sally Ossewaarde prepared; and all the other individuals who helped in preparation for the breakfast and meeting and arrived early to set up and prepare the food.

A show of hands was taken for each lake area to both recognize the area representatives and to see how many people attended from each of those areas.

Skip introduced the representatives from the Sheriff Department:  Jim Carol, Under Sheriff; Fred Segal, Sargent, Marine Safety Unit; and Chad Jahr, Deputy Marine Safety Officer.  Jim Carol spoke regarding general issues of marine safety and mentioned some recent vehicle break-ins in the area.  Fred Segal noted the expectation of his department’s ability to increase patrols this summer due to additional staffing.  In response to a question from the audience relative to small children operating motorized golf carts on local streets Jim Carol advised it was illegal for anyone other than a licensed driver to operate any motorized vehicle on a public road.

Minutes of June 28, 2003 Annual Meeting:  Approved as presented

Treasurers Report:  Approved as presented with a balance of $1,074.75.

Weevil Update:  Chuck Cubbage provided an update on the progress of the weevil treatment of the lake to combat Eurasian Milfoil by noting the salient points of a letter he prepared to the property owners.  An active weevil population has been established in the lake, and is increasing in areas where milfoil density is the greatest.  Native plant species are returning with the reduction in milfoil density in previously problem areas.  Further progress will occur as the weevil population migrates from areas where the milfoil density has decreased to the denser areas.  Continued attention to over-winter shoreline vegetation conditions and no wake speeds in the historically densest areas will assist in the continued progress of the weevil treatment effort, which was accomplished at less than half the cost of other treatment methods.  Chuck’s letter can be viewed at the Lake Associations web site at www.mlswa.org/elppa-382 .

Old/New Business:  Doug Dorgan encouraged everyone to sign in, receive a ticket for the door prize drawings, and pay their annual dues of only $15 if they have not already done so.  If anyone did not receive the April 2004 newsletter we probably do not have their current mailing address and they can verify what address we do have at the sign in table.  As advertised in the past two newsletters, there is a boater safety training class sponsored by the Association on July 10, in that only two people are signed up for the class we will need to cancel the class unless there are more signing up today.  Other classes are being held that could be attended.  Doug mentioned that several boat owners had experienced damage to their boats when muskrats chewed some of the wiring and owners should take precautions to reduce this possibility.  Doug also encouraged boater to use a no wake speed through the traditional weed beds to assist weevils in controlling the milfoil.

Prizes:  Several door prizes were awarded with winners being determined from ticket stubs drawn by Charlie Tapper and announced by Skip Youngblood.

Adjournment:  The 2004 annual meeting was adjourned at 10:55 AM.
