EAGLE LAKE-PAW PAW ASSOCIATION

Board of Director's Meeting

Van Buren Conference Center, Lawrence

Tuesday, April 18, 2000

President Glen Wilkinson called the meeting to order at 7:00pm.

Present were: President-Glen Wilkinson; Vice President-Tom Kohl; Secretary-Bernice Packer; Treasurer-Pat Cubbage; Past President-Mel Brown; Member at Large-John Tapper; E.L. Park-Chuck Cubbage; EL Campers-Skip Youngblood; Keepsake Shores-Jerry King; Trails End-Harold Finley.  Absent: Hoodrije Shores rep; EL Sub Div-Brian Hanson; Palmer Beach-Alice Goens; Collins Cove-Matt Leighton.

The minutes were handed out and approved as read.

Treasurer's report: Pat reported $2,289.96 in the treasury.  The money has been sent to the Mich. Lake & Streams Assn for the Riparians to be mailed to our members.  She read a letter received from the IRS stating we are exempt from income tax.

Chuck Cubbage stated he had been in contact with Minnesota University re the use of the weevil.  They are interest in tracking with us what happens.  The weevil is not a cure-all.  Suggestion was made to start on a couple of Ahot@ spots to see how it works.  It is possible the weevil may be in the lake.  It might be possible for it to be raised by us.

Glen stated in response to the Lake Biotool Questionnaires that were sent out, he received response back from everyone but Hoodrije and Palmer Beach.  He stated he would do a drive by survey on those areas.

Government Committee: Tom Kohl gave out handouts -Part 307-Inland Lake Levels and Part309- Inland Lake Improvements which he received from the web site of the dnr: www.dnr.state.mi.us.  It has been found out through the county drain commissioner, Orrin Dorr, the lake level of Eagle Lake is not recorded.  We do not have an established level, this needs to be done.   Glen Wilkinson stated he remembers doing the Alevel@ himself but it obviously was not recorded by the proper authorities.  He said he would try to locate the existing data from old records.  The structure is still there at the access site and has been for many years.  A petition needs to be signed to get the Alake level@.  Suggestion was made to have the petition signed at the annual meeting on July 22, 2000.  A petition would also have to be passed to establish a Lake Board.  If a Lake Board is established, the move can then be made with the lake improvement.  A Lake Board can also protect property values around the lake.  Van Buren County Drain Commissioner, Orrin Dorr, is game for this project and is willing to work with us.  The county commission is also an approachable group of people.

It would be wise to do both petitions as once and have at the annual meeting.

Much discussion followed.  By going through the Drain Commissioner, we are more in control.  Weevils are E. $1.00 each.  It would be advisable for the Association to have a member on the board.   Chuck Cubbage stated as members of the MLS&A, we can get questions answered.  Cliff Bloom, attorney for the MLSA, would be available to answer any legal questions we may have.  Skip Youngblood suggested finding out what is legally acceptable to establish the lake level since this was done years ago but not recorded.

Health & Safety Committee: Harold Finley suggested having sheriff representative come to our meeting on May 9 and give us information on the laws, etc.

Finance Committee: No report.

Newsletter Committee: A newsletter will hopefully go out sometime in May or first part of June.  Each committee is requested to do a Awrite up@ for the newsletter so we may inform the residents around the lake what we are doing in the different areas.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 9, 2000.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm.

                                        Respectfully submitted,

                                        Bernice Packer, Secretary
