EAGLE LAKE PAW PAW ASSOCIATION

Board of Directors Meeting

Wednesday, October 13, 1999

The Board of Directors meeting of the Eagle Lake Paw Paw Association was held at the home of Mel Brown.

President Glen Wilkinson called the meeting to order at 7:10 P.M.  Members present were: Glen Wilkinson, Pres.(Collins Cove); Pat Cubbage, Treas. (Eagle Lake Park); Tom Kohl, V.P. (Keepsake Shores); Harold Finly, Trails End; Skip Youngblood, Campers; Chuck Cubbage, Eagle Lake Park; Alice Goens, Palmer Beach; Larry Pizarck, Hoodjire; Jerry King, Keepsake Shores, Mel Brown, Hoodrije; and Mat Leighton, Collins Cove.

Minutes from the previous meeting were distributed, reviewed.  Motion by Pat Cubbage to approve and seconded by Mel Brown. Motion carried.

Pat Cubbage, Treas. reported a balance of $2,861.35.  Financial activity included disbursements of $150 to IRS for tax exempt status and $20.00 to State of Michigan for non profit filing fee.  Undeposited checks amounted to $30.00.  Motion to approve by Chuck Cubbage and seconded by Tom Kohl. Motion passed.

Water Quality/Weed Management Committee (Youngblood, C. Cubbage, and Brown): Skip Youngblood, Chuck Cubbage, and Mel Brown discussed activity regarding aquatic weed management.  Information continues to be collected from other lakes with weed problems.  Committee members plan on making contact with Mill Lake near Gobles and Ackley Lake regarding their chemical treatments.  Michigan Lake And Stream Association and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality staff will be asked for contacts at lakes using the weevil biological controls.  As information becomes available, fact sheets for various options will be developed.  Committee members will attend other relevant lake association meetings.  Debbie Rose, Eagle Lake, Texas Twp will be invited to our Nov 9, 1999 board meeting to discuss their experience in weed management.  Don Winnie, Exec Director, Michigan Lake and Stream Association will be invited to the December 14, 1999 board meeting.  John Faul will be asked to secure Lawrence meeting locations.

Health & Safety Committee (Finly and Tapper): Harold Finly reported a County Sheriff suggested a fan out call system that generated multiple calls (58) on water safety misbehavior was more likely to get attention, especially if information is provided on water craft color, number, size, etc.

Newsletter Committee (Kohl and Packer): Board was in full agreement that all lake residents should receive the newsletter, not just members.  The objective is to develop an educated lake community, not just paid Association members.  Lake resource protection and management will happen best when all who impact the lake are informed.  Jerry King was added to the Newsletter Committee.

Regarding the membership list, Bernice had asked that corrections be made to the master list of Association members.  There was consensus that the membership list use was to be internal only and not disseminated in a manner that made phone numbers, etc., available to outside sources.  However, It was agreed that newsletter information needed to include board members and committee members phone numbers so that people with questions or concerns could know who to contact.

Government Committee (Kohl & Faul): Tom Kohl indicated that DNR has paid their “fair share” for lake management measures in other lakes based on impact from State lake access sites.

Other Items: It was agreed by the board that the Association should join Michigan Lake and Stream Association effective January 1, 2000 based on the year end membership.

It was agreed that we need to remind all lake community residents that leaf burning within 50' of the water is not acceptable behavior, unless ashes are removed.  Nutrients in the ashes enrich the lake and  will promote more weed growth in the spring.

Harold Finly shared a copy of the original platting of Trails End that dated back to 1924.

Respectfully submitted,

Chuck Cubbage for Bernice Packer
