The May 2001Newsletter RESIDENT OPPORTUNITY: WELL WATER TESTING County health departments highly recommend yearly testing of private wells. Why? Even though your well water may taste fine, it can become contaminated with bacteria and agricultural pollutants. Children are especially susceptible to these pollutants. A few of the health effects of contaminated water are: birth defects, hyperactivity, ADD, lower IQ, behavioral & learning disabilities. Adults/kids can be affected with gastrointestinal disorders, skin infections, brain damage, blue-baby syndrome, & death. More information can be found on the attached sheet or at the EPA website. For a limited time, lake residents can easily get their water tested! The Kent-Ottawa Health Dept. will give us testing bottles for as many residents as are interested. You do your own testing (easy--just fill the small bottles with water from your tap following directions given to you). Return your completed form, bottles and $15 to Linda Lane. She will deliver the bottles for you to the Kent Co. Health Dept. In 2-3 weeks, you will receive a confidential report on your water supply. The county does not keep a record of the results nor does it forward the results to anyone. If you discover you have nitrates in your water, your letter will advise you of your options. No one from the Health Dept. will come to visit you. Questions? Call Kent Co. Health Dept. 336-3089 If you want to participate, call Linda Lane at 887-1562 and she will order bottles for you. DEADLINE TO PARTICIPATE: MAY 30, 2001 If you miss the deadline, you can always get the bottles yourself and take them in to the County. (Kent or Ottawa). Same price. The 2001 rummage sale is planned for two days--September 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chester Township Hall. Drop off: Sept 5 at Chester Township Hall. Larry Edmonds and Marv Knoper will be running the show! Last year, only ten families donated items; even fewer helped at the sale. Just think how much money we could get if more of you would donate! Please start collecting your items now. We only ask that they be clean and useable. The proceeds will go toward the 2002 Fireworks. GOOSE DETERRENTS Our weed treatment, Professional Lake Management, also handles 2 types of goose deterrents. I just copied them verbatim from their newsletter. If you are interested, you can call them at 800-382-4434. "Are you fed up with overabundant geese--and the piles of "goose grease" they leave behind? Goose droppings are not just unsightly, they add nutrients to your lake or pond and are loaded with potentially harmful bacteria. A single goose produces 1200 pounds of droppings each year. If it seems like all of them are in your yard, contact us today for a solution. PLM has a variety of innovative tools for managing your goose problem. ReJeX-iT is the old standby of goose repellants. Its grape flavor and odor are unpleasant to geese. Applied to grassy areas, such as lawns, it renders grass unpalatable to geese, driving them off to more desirable feeding areas. FlightControl© is a new high-tech goose deterrent. FlightControl works on two levels. First, it includes a digestive irritant that gives geese indigestion when they eat treated grass. FlightControl also contains a visual warning market that is invisible to humans but provides a highly visible warning to geese, allowing them to identify and avoid treated areas on sight. Goose D-Fence. Goose D-Fence is a specially engineered, retractable fence that can be installed or removed in under 10 minutes. Goose exclusion fences aren't a new idea--they have been used successfully for years. Goose D-Fence rolls strong monofilament fencing onto an enclosed reel and provides attractive fence posts with stainless steel bases. The result is an attractive, long-lasting goose fence that can easily be put up to securely keep the geese out and quickly removed for parties, weekends, family lake days, or whatever. A single Goose D-Fence kit covers up to 150 feet of shoreline. "None of these management techniques harms geese." GREAT DAY RECEIPTS!! BAD NEWS! Great Day is discontinuing this program.
