Grose Park
Improvements!!
Ottawa Co. Parks was recently informed its grant
request for improvements to Grose Park was approved and
is awaiting legislative authorization. A $410,000 grant
from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund will be
matched with $250,000 in County dollars to fund the large
park renovation project.
Park facilities to be developed with the grant funds
include a new entrance drive, sign and gate; improvements
to the existing parking area and construction of a new
handicap accessible parking area (30 spaces) in the upper
area; hard surface walkways linking key use areas;
addition of a sand play area near the water; addition of
a new picnic shelter; new play equipment; new restrooms;
construction of a fishing dock on the east end of the
waterfront; elimination of one ballfield and adding 2
sand volleyball courts; nature trail improvements plus
addition of a trail head and interpretive signs; and
general landscaping.
Copies of the park master plan showing a
preliminary layout of facilities is available from the
County Parks Office by calling 738-4810.
Timing of the improvements will depend in part on the
State legislature which must pass an appropriation bill
which includes the Grose Park project. County Park
officials hope to begin construction in the fall of 1999
and finish work as early as possible in 2000.
We appreciate the interest the Ottawa County Parks
Commission has in Grose Park.
Lakeside
Landscaping Class
- Free to CLA members
- $10 to nonmembers
- To take place in March
- Taught by an expert
- Bargain prices on plants
One way to slow down nutrient loading in our lake is
by planting certain types of vegetation in a "buffer
strip" along your waters edge. Many of the
instructors ideas are extremely attractive and
create "winter interest". Karen Laugenberg will
give us step-by-step instructions on what, where and how
to plant. Individualized landscape plans may also be
ordered. The class will take place on a Saturday morning
in March. Watch for more details in the March newsletter.

Virginia Creager
Passes Away
As many of us remember, we went to Ginnys home
to pay our taxes and get our dog licenses every year
before there were offices in the Township Hall. She
served as Township Treasurer for 21 years.
Mrs. Creager helped the Township stay focused on
paving roads and moving toward a sanitary sewer system
for Conklin. Ginny was involved in many ways in the
community and will be missed by all. In 1979, she and
Dick Wolfe, a long-time lake resident and township
trustee, began serving lunch to area senior citizens,.
The tradition is carried on today.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, in
1997. Don and Ginny raised six sons and one daughter.
Long-Time Lake
Resident Erk Schmucker Passes Away
Erk and Jean Schmucker moved to Crockery Lake in the
1960's. Erk and Jean have been involved in many CLA
events over the years and Erk also was on the CLA Board.
Erk ran a tight ship while he was the Park
Attendant at Grose Park for many years. Erk was a
favorite among his neighbors - always happy to help at
the drop of a hat. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and
4 children. We will always have fond memories of him.
Snowmobiler
Alert!
A reminder that snowmobilers should seek
permission to travel on another personss property
before doing so.
Farmers in the area often plant winter wheat which is
killed by the weight of a snowmobile upon it. Please be
thoughtful and courteous to our farming neighbors. Their
livelihood depends on the success of their crops. Farmers
are important to all of us!
A Solution to
Pollution
Go Sewer!!
Our latest information on the sewer project is: The
engineering firm of Fleis & Vandenbrink Engineering,
Inc. has obtained pertinent information from the Ottawa
County Drain & Health Departments. It has also
reviewed reports from the DEQ. We should receive a report
on their findings by the end of February.

Buoy at Landing
The CLA Board has looked into the possibility of a
buoy at the boat landing to keep boaters away from the
docks next to the launch. To obtain an approved buoy, the
CLA board has written a letter to Chester Township
requesting the buoy. Chester Township, after reviewing
the request, has contacted the DNR on repeated occasions
to discuss permission to place a buoy on the lake. The
DNR has not returned the Townships calls. If and
when the DNR does call back, it will need to visit the
site; make a recommendation as to its feasibility;
contact the Township and a public meeting will be held at
which time interested persons may attend and voice their
opinions. If we are successful, a legal buoy may be
placed at the landing. Do not hold your breath on this
one.
Great Day
