Crockery Lake
Sewer Project Still in the Works
According to our sources, Fleis & VandenBrink and
Chester Township officials have been working diligently
to prepare for the public meeting regarding the Crockery
Lake sewer project.
No date has been set for the public meeting yet. It
should be before the end of the year.

No Wake Issue
The CLA Board is gathering information from the DNR
and Michigan Lake & Stream. An informational handout
on the no-wake process, including pros and cons will be
included with the poll. Look for this in September.
This is a very important issue that will affect us
all. The CLA Board wants to be sure you are fully advised
of the facts before you make your decision.
Tips for
Successful Reporting of Boating Violations
If you confront a boating violator, remain calm and
polite. Do not antagonize the boater or resort to
name-calling. Explain the problem to them and write down
their MC number.
If it looks like the violator is going to be on the
lake for at least an hour, use 9-1-1 to report the
incident.
If the violator has left the lake and you have his MC
number, you can leave a message at the following number
and Sgt. Loree will return your call (within a couple of
days) and will contact the violator via phone.

Preperation for
Another Toxic Blue-Green Algae Bloom
The lake board decided in the event of another bad
algae bloom,we will have the lake treated with copper
sulfate. It was a close vote on this one. The blooms are
viewed as a health threat. The fumes emitted from the
bloom cause allergy attacks and bloom-infested waters
also cause skin rashes. We experienced both of the above
during the last bloom.
Algae blooms occur because our lake has excessive
nitrogen and phosphates. These nutrients and hot weather
cause algae blooms. The nutrients come from: leaky septic
systems, fertilizer runoff, and farm runoff. Our lake is
extremely high in nutrients and therefore is much more
prone to algae blooms.
Weather conditions will determine the number of algae
blooms we will have each year. Lots of rain followed by
hot weather conditions will create more blooms. The rain
dumps nutrients from the soil into the lake. The hot
weather heats up the nutrients which turns into green
water and algae clumps.
We can help control algae blooms by: (1) pumping our
septic systems; (2) complying with the fertilizer ban;
(3) not burning leaves when the wind blows over the
water; (4) Voting Yes for Sewer!!!
According to the experts, a sewer system will greatly
improve lake clarity and nutrient loading.
Food For Thought: The value of your home is
largely dependent upon the condition of Crockery Lake.
Attached are graphs showing Crockery Lake's
phosphorous level at 76. A review of the results of other
lakes in Michigan shows no other lake within 20 points of
Crockery Lake. The other graph is for water clarity - how
far down in the water can you see - our average is 5.9
feet. Most lakes in our area report a clarity level of
10.9. A water clarity test taken July 28 was only 3 feet!
A sewer system will help turn these numbers around.
