The April 1999 Newsletter

CLA is Online

The Crockery Lake Association now has a web page you can access at the above address. Ben Rousch, Chuck & Linda Lane's son, has created the web page for us. He is senior at University of Michigan.

Ben has included some back issues of the newsletter, as well as the current newsletter. We will be adding more information in the future--such as our new ordinances.

One section you can "click on" is the History of the Lake button. Ben invites you to e-mail him with history tidbits to be added. This can be anything from big fish you have caught, to boat fires, to the old steam boat that sunk. Feel free to contact him with information you think is appropriate. He can also include pictures if you want to scan them in and attach them to your e-mail.

In the next several months we will also have a web page in conjunction with Michigan Lake & Stream Association. We will give you more details on this later.

Lakeside Landscaping Class

Thursday, April 22
7 - 9 p.m.
Chester Township Hall

Please call Pat Wolters to register for the lakeside landscaping class. 887-8707. The first 20 to register will receive a free plant!

This class is free to all CLA members. Nonmembers will need to pay a $10 fee.

We are using money from the Great Day Receipt Fund to pay for this class.

This class will not be held again! This is a one-time opportunity to learn about the type of plants that help cut down on nutrient-loading in the lake. It is also your chance to educate yourself on Michigan native plants which will thrive by the water's edge.

Many of these plants are very attractive and require little, if any, upkeep by you.

Rides to Township are available to those who can't drive at night or need transportation. Call Pat Wolters at 887-8707.

There will also be a native plant sale held during the workshop where participants can purchase perennial plants at a reduced rate.

Other topics include butterfly gardens and native plants; individualized landscape plans may also be ordered.

Hope to see you there! Also, if you have a non-resident friend who would like to attend, they are welcome to come. Their cost will be only $10.

April CLA Board Meeting

April 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Wolters' residence (2442 Crockery Shores Road).

No Wake for Crockery Lake?

Because the Lake Board has received numerous requests for a no-wake restriction on the lake over the years, we want to find out the residents' interest level in pursuing such a project. What does the majority really want?

We feel the most efficient way to find out if this is a priority for lake residents is by sending a ballot to you with your billing statement for this year's dues. Please take a moment to "vote" and return your ballot (hopefully together with your dues!) to Sue Wobma, 2564 Crockery Shores Road). The votes will be tabulated and announced at the annual meeting. (Another good reason to attend the annual meeting in June!)

Great Day Receipts

A great big thank you to the lake resident who donated a large bag of receipts, this contribution, together with other receipts received resulted in another $128.41 for our "lake improvement" fund. Give your receipts to any CLA Board member or drop them in the CLA mailboxes located on either side of the lake--

Possible Increase in Marine Patrol on Lake

We have learned that some lakes in Kent County pay a marine deputy for a specified amount of time to patrol their lake. We are hopeful we may be able to do the same with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Dept.

The Board has contacted the Ottawa County Sheriff, Gary Rosema, about the possibility of more marine patrol on the weekends.

We have not received a response from Sheriff Rosema as of the printing date of this newsletter, but will keep you informed of our progress on this all-important issue.
