Baldwin Lake Association Newsletter

An Anchor for our Community

September 2003 Volume 10 Issue 5

President’s Corner

The weather this year has continued to be a little ridiculous.   One or two weeks of cold and/or rain then one or two weeks of hot and possibly stormy then back through the cycle again.   We had the first mosquito spraying on June 7th and, as of early August, have already had more sprayings than prior years. We will continue to repeat the sprays when the mosquito population increases and the weather cooperates for spraying.   The media had been warning last winter that the mosquito population would be much worse this year and are now warning that August and September are the worst mosquito months.   At this rate we will apparently end up short in the Mosquito Fund which will mean reaching into the General Fund once again.   This also means that we start the next season without any cushion in the Mosquito Fund.

The results from the Secchi Disk and Fecal Coliform tests so far this year have been shown on the Website and are again posted elsewhere in this newsletter.   As the season progresses, more testing results will be added to the list in future newsletters as well as to the Website.

We did not have a 2003 Flotilla since nobody seemed to know of anyone that was going to be entering it.   We are looking for a committee Chair for the 2004 Flotilla so they can, with help, have time to plan for the Flotilla.   It would be of assistance to that person if those interested in having a float would contact us, either by e-mail, phone, snail-mail or in person, of their desire.

We only had 15 residences taking advantage of the Home Drinking Water Quality Testing of Coliform, Nitrates, & Lead this past July.   The EPA recommends testing your drinking water-about every 2 or 3 years, especially when (1) Density of homes is high, with several drawing from the same aquifer, (2) Wells are less than 70' deep or (3) Soil-type allows quick passage of contaminants into wells. Numbers (1) and (3) describe our Lake area quite well & I fear that (2) does as well in many cases.   This is why it is a little surprising to have only approximately 6% of the people around the Lake take part in the Testing.

We hope to see many of you at our Association meetings which are scheduled for the third Monday of the month at the Porter Township Administration building, just north of the Fire Station on Baldwin Prairie north of U.S. 12.   Although the voting needs to be channeled thru your Advisor, we appreciate the discussion and ideas from all members to be sure that we are handling things the way you wish it to be.   Remember that this is YOUR Lake Association and we want to listen to your requests that will help to fulfill the Baldwin Lake Association’s mission: MAINTAIN AND PRESERVE OUR LAKE COMMUNITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH EDUCATION, COMMUNICATION, AND COMMITMENT TO BALDWIN LAKE.

We want everyone to know that the officers and advisors always welcome your suggestions and comments by E-mail to baldwin-lake-366@mlswa.org, by Snail Mail to P.O. Box 311 or by phone to any officer or advisor.

COMMUNITY POLICING

The Pancake/Sausage breakfast was a success thanks to the many who contributed!   Our community children enjoyed face paintingand balloons, Withers Choo-Choo barrel train, the fire house, and the dunk tank while the adults enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and looking at the displays at all the booths.

Don't forget our bi-annual blood drive on September 13th.   Area blood banks are extremely low right now!   This is your chance to help.

Haunted Woods!!!!   Mark October 10th and 11th on your calendar.   We need your help.   Volunteer on the scare trail or on the children's trail.   Call Deputy Kim Sharma at 877-445-8644 if you can help.

Many Thanks to Weldon and Mary Lou Parks for generously allowing us to have our annual picnic on their property.   We enjoyed the weather, the company, and of course, the food!
