The stream monitoring program is designed to measure the health of streams by identifying the species and numbers of macro-invertebrates found at selected sites in the streams.  Initially, each participating school is given $1000 worth of equipment and funds to carry out their sampling program.

TEN high schools were selected to participate in Michigan's stream monitoring program during 2002-2003.  Each year, additional high schools are selected to participate in the program.

Money for the project is provided by the Irwin Andrew Porter Foundation and Toshiba America Foundation.

In addition to providing miscellaneous training materials, each high school is given the following types of equipment to carry out their sampling programs:

Upon completion of the program, the MLSA turns the equipment over to the participating high school in the hope and expectation that the school will continue watershed monitoring in the local area.

The MLSA appointed Jeff Kalember, a science teacher from Gaylord High School, to coordinate the stream monitoring program with the high schools and lake associations  participating in the project.

Jeff's first step was to set up a training program to teach project partipants about stream sampling.  The training was held on September 17, 2002 at Gaylord High School .  Twenty-seven people representing the high schools, cooperating lake associations, and other interested parties attended the six-hour session. As part of the training, participants took a field trip to the upper stretch of the Manistee River where they collected and identified macro-invertebrate samples from the river.
