Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program (CLMP) Its time again to start thinking about enrolling your lake (be it the lake you live on and / or a lake you care about) in the Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program for the 2006 spring/summer seasons. CLMP provides an excellent and unique opportunity to perform a basic water quality check-up on your lake with just a little training and out of pocket expense for your association or for anyone to "Adopt-a-Lake" of their choosing. In a state blessed with over 11,000 lakes and a State of Michigan without ample resources to conduct water quality testing on even a small percentage of these lakes, CLMP provides an opportunity for participants to exhibit stewardship and responsibility toward these priceless freshwater gems, receive free training on monitoring procedures as well as provides an "excuse" to venture on to your lake to conduct monitoring procedures that most participants describe as fun. The water quality data that monitoring provides for your lake allows the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to catalog and track the water quality of each participating lake and is utilized in the policy making decision process on how best to allocate limited financial and human resources as well as provides a water quality reference baseline for your lake against which future CLMP data for your lake can be referenced. In MLSA Region 2, only a small percentage of our inland lakes of over fifty acres participate in this unique and rewarding program. I would encourage MLSA member association, non-member associations as well as individuals interested in "Adopting - a - Lake" to sign up for this coming year (2006) . Please see the MLSA's website home page for additional info on how to enroll in this great program or call Region 2 Vice-President Scott Brown at 517-914-1684 for assistance or more information in getting started in the Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program. The help wanted sign is out in MLSA Region 2! The pay is lousy but the rewards and sense of self-satisfaction are great ! Volunteer some time to help further the MLSA's primary mission of educating folks about the value of our freshwater lakes and streams - we are looking for lake association members and/or folks who are just plain interested in getting involved in preserving and protecting our  freshwater gems. Duties include contacting and assisting member lake and stream associations, assisting the Region 2 Vice-President in organizing meeting and seminars, talking to your township Board about the importance of our lakes and streams, distributing our literature throughout your county as well as being just an all around goodwill representative for the MLSA. Please contact Scott Brown at 517-914-1684 if you are interested in becoming a representative for this great organization. Michigan Lake and Stream Associations Region 2 encompasses five of the most inland lake inundated counties in our state - this five county region is graced with 140 lakes of fifty acres or more ! Created by the retreat of mountain size glaciers around twelve thousand years ago, our bountiful inland lakes and streams and their parent watersheds continue to dominate and characterize the very essence of our region by providing an immense supply of freshwater, habitat for a great diversity of plants and animals, outstanding recreational value as well as provide a profoundly rich and attractive environment that has been the driving force behind substantial social and economic growth in our region's counties, townships, cities and villages. It is the ultimate goal of the Michigan Lake and Stream Associations Region 2 to foster greater awareness, appreciation and stewardship of these immense natural resources among the citizens of Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Jackson and Lenawee counties. |
