Lake Representatives Meetings

The MLSA Regions 1 and 5 hosted a lake representatives meeting on Saturday February 21, 2009 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at the Hamburg Township Senior Community Center. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Hamburg Township annual CLMP Kick-Off Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the CLMP program and water quality monitoring in general, to enroll in the 2009 CLMP, and to provide an update on MLSA business.  Jo Latimore, from MSU, attended the meeting and did a presentation on the CLMP program.  Unfortunately, there was a winter weather snow warning on the day of the meeting and that limited lake representatives and MLSA attendance.   Although that was the case, twelve people were able to attend the meeting and learned about the CLMP.

The MLSA Could Use Your Help

E-Mail List:  I would like to generate an email contact list with email addresses for a representative from each of our Region 5 member lake associations and for individual and corporate Region 5 members.  At the current time, I do not have a complete list of email addresses for Region 5 MLSA members.  Email is a very effective way to pass along important MLSA updates and information to help you keep informed about MLSA business.  I am encouraging each lake association president to provide me with an email address for a person in your lake association who can serve as a contact person for your association and for individual and corporate members to provide me with their email information.    Please send your email address to:  Ginny Himich.  Thank you for your help!

Happenings on your Lake:  if you have experienced something newsworthy on your lake or in your watershed, please provide the information to me.  Questions/concerns/news/problems and solutions—I would like to start posting this valuable information on this web site so that viewers can see what our membership is doing.  This is a chance for you to tell everyone who visits the site about important accomplishments on your lake or in your watershed. Your accomplishments could help others solve similar issues!  Information sharing is a great way for you and your neighboring lakes to develop solutions to common problems.

A web site available to help lake property owners protect shoreline -- While environmentally friendly landscaping is gaining in popularity with many homeowners, lake property owners have special environmental needs when it comes to protecting and making lake frontage attractive. To learn strategies for "lakescaping" their shorelines, property owners and landscape professionals can visit a web site developed by Michigan State University (MSU) Extension.  This site offers information on lake-friendly shoreline management and restoration for Michigan inland lakes. Topics such as landscaping, storm water retention and erosion control using native plants are addressed using photos and descriptive graphics. In addition, the site details the many lake-friendly features of the Shoreline Management Demonstration Area, located at MSU's W. K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) on Gull Lake in Kalamazoo County.  "The website offers tips from a Michigan perspective, including state and local permits needed for certain shoreline projects," said Jane Herbert, Extension water quality educator at the KBS Land and Water Program. "We wanted a website that would help people understand the principles of lakescaping so they can apply those principles to a restoration plan."  The site includes links to additional resources from Wisconsin and Minnesota, where lakescaping is a more familiar term. Armed with more information, shoreline property owners may choose to lakescape their own properties or hire professional landscapers. Either way, the information included in this web site can improve communication during the planning process.
