Purple Loosestrife … What is it?
Purple loosestrife is an invasive perennial plant that is spreading in wetlands, shorelines, and roadside ditches. Thick stands of purple loosestrife crowd out native plants and reduce food, shelter, and nesting sites for wildlife, birds, turtles, and frogs. This plant was first introduced in the 1800s for bee keeping and as an ornamental plant.
You should know how to identify purple loosestrife, detecting new infestation can prevent the spread of this plant. Reporting new sightings will help control it.
What can you do? ▪ Learn to identify purple loosestrife ▪ Do not transplant it! ▪ Avoid planting seed mixtures containing purple loosestrife. ▪ Remove aquatic plants, seeds, and mud from equipment, clothing, and footwear. ▪ Contact a state agency below to get involved with control efforts in your area. Report new sightings – not exact location; wrap a segment of plant, stem, leave, and flower spike in a wet paper towel, place in a sealed plastic bag: and call the US Fish and Wildlife Service Fishers Resources Offices in Alpena, MI (989-356-5102).
Help keep Rainy Lake free from an infestation. Cards to assist in identifying this species will be available at the Annual Membership meeting in July.

RLPOA Directory of Members
A new format will be implemented for the Rainy Lake Property Owners Association, Directory of Members. During the General Membership Meeting in July 2007 discussion was held regarding the content and format of the directory.
One member asked if the directory could be posted on the Internet. It was felt that this would make the entire membership available to the public and that was not the intent. All information in the directory is public, but the intent was to share the information with the membership only. Other members asked to have their e-mail addresses added. That would be entirely by permission only. Those present, that wanted their e-mail address included were asked to put that information on the sign-up sheet that they had signed. If you would like your email address included in the new Directory, please contact Diane Lewis.
The format was discussed and while no formal motion was made, over all it was felt that the members would be responsible for their own binder, for cost reasons, and the directory would be published on 8 ½ x 11 paper.
The new, improved RLPOA directory will be available at the Annual General Membership Meeting July 5, 2008. One directory will be available per property owner. A log will be maintained to reflect who has received their directory. Every attempt will be made to get the new version to all of our members.
Any ideas for changes can be directed to any board member. Edits can be directed to Diane Lewis’ email, dianelewis@freeway.net.
