During a general membership meeting, the idea to restock the lake using some of the monies from the Riparian Rights Committee was overwhelmingly voted down.  Sue Tesmer offered to attempt collecting monies for a voluntary fish fund and offered to chair a committee.  This concept was accepted by the membership and Sue had her mission.  The Voluntary Fish Fund committee was created.  Sue Tesmer is the chairman and other members include Alan Hickman, Addy Gallatin, and Randy Springs.

The 1st year trout were planted, but unbeknownst to the Committee, these were hybrid and not a reproducing variety.  “They are large enough to be kept if you’re lucky enough to catch them,” Sue said.  The 2nd year, 9 to 12 inch walleye and crappie were planted.  These will take approximately 3 years to mature to “keeper” size with our subsidizing their diet with minnows.  Without that, it would take 3 to 6 years to reach mature size.  Minnows have been planted to provide food for these and our other fish.

With the lake dropping as much as it is, I questioned whether planting fish was the

right thing to do.  I was told that we have several deep holes in the lake and that is where the fish congregate when the lake drops and come back in the spring.  Of course, once the water warms, the fish scatter.  The committee does a great deal of research to keep themselves educated on the various aspects affecting our lake.

The goals for the Voluntary Fish Fund Committee are to get the lake back to where it was with the “stories we hear from the old-timers; catching your limit”.  We all know that some of those stories may be fish tales, but to just go out fishing and enjoy the sport.  The second goal is to get to the point of reproducing our own minnows on the lake.  There are several people that have already put out “minnow motels” under their swim platforms, or under their docks.

With your assessment this year the $5 per lot Fish Fund has been re-established by majority vote at the annual meeting.  A ballot will be included with your assessment which will let you have a say in the type of species you’d like to see in our lake.  The committee will tally the votes and go by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice, so majority will rule.

The committee is always open to suggestions.  You can feel free to contact any one of them for information or comment.
