approved by the board. He obtains 3 or 4 bids for any new work. If the bids are close, the board discusses the pros and cons and determines who is awarded the work.
Jim and his wife Karen purchased their property in 1989 from a friend after visiting the Ranch a few times. They moved up from Waterford, Michigan in 1996. Jim and Karen are avid nature lovers. When I drove up to their home, Karen was on their porch chatting on the phone, while a small doe stood grazing nearby. “She watches over the deer”, Jim said. This one had an injury on its back that appeared to be from an arrow. Even though I drove right up to the house, the doe just watched me cautiously and continued to eat. Of course, once I left the car, she headed to the woods.
Chuck Lewis is a Director on the board. His special assignment is “park maintenance” and the RLPOA directory. Whether repairs are needed to the fencing or general clean up and mowing is needed, Chuck obtains bids and upon approval of the board gets a contract signed with the awarded contractor. Previously there were no written contracts to protect our association and board. All contracts are maintained by the treasurer. Chuck works with his wife, Diane on the RLPOA directory. The first edition and first updates were completed. A revision to the directory will be completed by the annual meeting in 2008. See related article “RLPOA Directory” on page 6.

over from Charlevoix, Michigan in 2001. They had been looking for retirement property and found several pieces for sale on the lake. They had been to Rainy Lake in the early 70’s to visit their friends from downstate, the Childress’s. Now they enjoy many outings together … they live next door!
Dave Cook is the RLPOA board President. As the president Dave resides over the annual meeting and the board meetings.
Dave and his wife, Ellen bought their first property on Rainy Lake in 1978 from Elwyn Wilcox, the original developer of the lake after Dave’s mother saw their cottage advertised in the Detroit News. They’ve continued to purchase lots around them as they’ve become available and still look for a few special lots. The family had previously vacationed at Black Lake.
Dave is kept very busy as a Global Account Manager for Cognos, a Business Intelligence software company.
Dave sees his position as president of the association as generally looking after the welfare of the organization. Dave makes sure the interest of RLPOA is represented in all matters.
