Dennis and Susanne affectionately refer to the lake as “Drainy Lake” because of the great drought of 1999. They went for rides on their 4-wheeler and Susanne would ask Dennis to explain one more time how they ever actually did get a boat in there! “It looked like the Grand Canyon.” But in the spring of 2006 they contacted their neighbor because the water was so high around his shed. What’s that old adage … if you don’t like the weather (make that water) in Michigan (make that Rainy Lake) wait a while. It’ll change!
Dave Tesmer is a Director on the board. He has been given the special assignment of insurance, but has helped Dennis Farmer with the signs and Jim Rochon with the roads. Dave did a cost comparison on our insurances and found ours to be reasonable. During the process, Dave found the association didn’t have a copy of the policies and was able to obtain one. He has also negotiated having full explanations included with all increases at the time of the invoice.
Dave and his wife Sue are originally from Minnesota and were avidly looking for a place to return to their roots. They weren’t able to find what they wanted but their son got them to consider northern Michigan. He found Rainy Lake but when Dave and Sue came up each property they were interested in was either taken off the market or already sold. They found their current home and Sue fell in love with the view of the lake. They bought in 2004 and moved up from Arkansas.

Dave and Sue had the scare of a lifetime this summer. Upon returning from dinner out, they found the entrance to the Ranch blocked by police cars. They explained where they lived and were told a house was on fire. The house was only two doors down from theirs. This was one time this board member did not observe the 20mph speed limit. Would any of us? The fire departments did a fabulous job of getting the fire under control quickly.
Dave’s biggest concern at this time is the condition of the roads. He feels this is one area the board needs to have as a top priority moving forward.
Debby Siebel is the RLPOA board Treasurer. As such, she is responsible for paying the associations bills, invoicing association members for their annual assessments, collecting monies when due, balancing the association financial records. Everything is documented three times. Debby also assists the auditors by providing requested documentation and explaining our processes and procedures.
Debby and her husband Mark bought their property in 1986. Mark’s parents had already purchased property and their cabin. Both families are from the Detroit suburbs and vacationed frequently at Black Lake. Debby and Mark are both avid hunters and purchased their year-round home on 40 acres in 2004.
Debby’s philosophy about the water level in Rainy Lake is “when the water is down, you’re no longer on the lake, you’re in the country”.
Jim Rochon is a Director on the board. He has been given the special assignment of “road maintenance”. If its too dusty, he orders spray; monitors for plowing and grading; and coordinates any new road work |
