There will be a charge of $5.00 which includes the cost of lunch.

You will be issued your Boating Safety Certificate (BSC) providing you pass the written test given that day by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department.

Information from The Handbook of Michigan Boating Laws and ResponsibilitiesBoating safety certificate

It's the Law: Before Going Out

Who May Operate a Boat

Those less than 12 years of age:

bulletMay operate a boat powered by a motor of no more than 6 horsepower (hp) legally without restrictions.
bulletMay operate a boat powered by a motor of more than 6 hp but no more than 35 hp legally only if they are directly supervised on board by a person at least 16 years of age.
bulletMay not operate a boat powered by a motor of more than 35 hp legally under any conditions.

Those 12 to 15 years of age:

bulletMay operate a boat powered by a motor of no more than 6 hp legally without restrictions.
bulletMay operate a boat powered by a motor of more than 6 hp legally only if they:
bulletHave passed a boating safety course approved by the Department of Natural Resources and have on board their boating safety certificate or ...
bulletAre accompanied on board by a person at least 16 years of age.

Those 16 years of age or older may operate any boat on the waters of Michigan. Note: See "Who May Operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC)" below.

Who May Operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC)

Those less than 12 years of age may not legally operate a PWC.

Those 12 and 13 years of age may operate a PWC legally only if ALL of the following conditions are satisfied:

bulletThe operator is accompanied solely by his or her parent or legal guardian and ...
bulletBoth the operator and the parent or legal guardian have obtained a boating safety certificate and ...
bulletThe PWC is equipped with a lanyard-type ignition safety switch and the parent or legal guardian has the lanyard attached to his or her person, clothing, or PFD.

Those 14 years of age or older:

bulletAnd born after December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate.
bulletAnd born on or before December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally without restrictions.

The owner of a Personal Watercraft is responsible for and will be held liable for anyone that you let use that machine, regardless of age.  It is presumed that the personal watercraft is being operated with the knowledge and consent of the owner.  It is a good idea to have your child attend this class, even if they already have their BSC.

In addition, in the class you will learn of other boating regulations including:

bullet

It is illegal to operate a PWC during the period that begins at sunset and ends at 8:00 a.m. “Sunset” means that time (which changes daily) determined by the national weather service.

bullet

A child under the age of 12, either being towed or on a PWC, must be wearing a Type I or Type II PFD

bullet

Any child under the age of 7 years on a boat has to be wearing a Type I or Type II PFD at all times

Unfortunately, Personal Watercraft are involved in a lot of all boating accidents!  You, as the owner of a personal watercraft, are responsible for anyone that you let use the PWC, regardless of his or her age. The law presumes that the personal watercraft is being operated with the knowledge and consent of the owner.  When you or your children's friends or relatives visit and want to use your PWC, it is important that they know how to operate and handle the watercraft and are familiar with the unique properties of the vehicle, in addition to having a BSC on them.

This is a great class for anyone who may be using any watercraft as well as being a good refresher for those who already have their BSC.

So call the PBWOA Hot Line at (734) 878-6770. Give the answering machine your name, phone number and the number of people that plan to attend; then mark your calendar for Saturday, May 21, 2012,  from  8 A.M.  to 4 P.M. at the Portage Yacht Club. There will be a charge of $5.00 to cover the cost of the lunch served. You will be able to obtain your BSC that day.
