Boat Survey

How many boats do we have on the lakes?

 We know, care to guess?

We have counted the number of boats on the five lakes, Little Portage, Big Portage, Base, Tamarack and Whitewood. A total of 1059 homes were included in the counting plus the three marinas, which would be Klave’s (McGregor), Klave’s (Dexter-Pinckney Rd.) and the Portage Yacht Club. We also counted the DNR Public Launch Site, Michigan Paddle Sports, Marcia Richardson Camp Grounds and Rivendell.  The survey was taken on Sept. 4, 2001. We came up with total of 2875 boats.  The break down in the different categories was:

Pontoons            842

Powerboats        842

Jet Skis               414

Fishing               192

Sail                     264

Paddle                239

Canoe                   76

High Power            6

Why the survey? If and when the DNR comes around and wants to increase the parking at the Public Launch Site or again starts their planning for a new public launching site, we want to be able to say we have enough boats on these lakes now!
