Creel Census - The Cedar Lake, Lake Improvement Lake Board contracted with Superior Environmental and Aquatic Services, Inc (SEAS) to conduct an intensive creel census on Cedar Lake June 08 - October 08.  Starting in early June SEASl had one to two individuals on the lake for 8 hour shifts interviewing fishermen on approximately 55 days throughout the 2008 season.  The goal was to accrue a detailed log of information on the success and fishing habits of Cedar Lake fishermen/women.  This will be used to make decisions regarding the improvement of our fishery.

2008 Pike Spawn Evaluation - As a part of the lake management contract with Aquest Corp. to develop and oversee the treatment of aquatic plants on Cedar Lake, Aquest is also contracted to oversee and develop a fish and habitat management plan.  The later is sub-contracted to SEAS LLC.  An important part of that effort in 2008 was an evaluation of the early spring spawning run of northern pike up, primarily, Sherman Creek from Cedar Lake into the swamp.  To download a PDF copy of the report, please click on the following link:

2008 Fishery Assessment - The Cedar Lake Improvement Lake Board contracts an analysis of the lake's fishery every year.  SEAS Inc. has studied Cedar Lake's fishery for over 5 years.  You may obtain the report by clicking on the following link:  LakeInformation/AICLA - 2008 Fishery Assessment.pdf

Spawn Benches Added to Cedar Lake - January 2009, the association contracted SEAS, Inc. to assist us with building and placing artificial spawn benches in the lake.  SEAS, after observing in-lake spawning activity on Cedar Lake for a number of years, determined that there are inadequate spawning beds in the lake.  Six benches were built and located on the lake as directed by SEAS for the greatest effectiveness.  Click on the following link to see the report of that effort.

DNR Fish Census - On Wednesday night, July 17th, the DNR worked Cedar Lake doing electro-shock fishing to gather information about our fishery for a game fish census or survey.  Preliminary feedback was that this year's walleye plant looks like it took well.  They counted some 75 1st year walleye, ranging in size from 4 to over 7 inches.  Some pike were taken as well.  The general feeling, however, is that our game fish fishery is not doing well.  The DNR will issue its formal report  sometime this winter.  Check back here, the report will be published on our web site as soon as we receive it.

Walleye Fishery Update - On July 10th at 2;30PM the DNR planted 60,000 walleye fingerlings in Cedar Lake at the DNR boat launch.  Click on "Lake Pictures" above for some photos of the event.

Fish Habitat Study - The Lake Improvement Lake Board that handles aquatic plant management for Cedar Lake contracts an annual evaluation of the lake's fish habitat, as it relates to aquatic plants, with Aquest Corporation.  Aquest sub-contracts that portion of the contract to Superior Environmental and Aquatic Services (SEAS) LLC.  Gary Crawford, a senior environmental professional with SEAS has studied the fish habitat of Cedar Lake for the last three years via this contract.   A new report from Gary has just been received.  Click on: LakeInformation/AICLA - Lake Board- 2007 Fishery Report - Aquest.pdf to view or download the report.

As an outgrowth of three years of fish habitat analysis, SEAS has determined that our lake's fishery issues may be linked to a lack of spawning areas, and refuge areas in our lake.  SEAS has produced a report at our request, that focuses on spawning, nursery and refuge areas around the lake.  This report identifies areas that could benefit from the introduction of manmade spawning aids, called, spawning benches, and areas that need refuge improvement.  This spring the association hopes to pull together a team of volunteers to work a weekend.  Gary Crawford will come up and oversee the building of spawning benches, instruct us on the proper placement of them, and accompany us on at least one installation of a spawning bench.  This report will be the guideline for that activity.

It turns out that these improvements are likely to be what is needed to improve our fishery, not expensive stocking.
