- Do Your Part to Disinfect Your Watercraft - A fish virus Viral
Hemorrhagic Septicima (VHS) has spread to the Great Lakes and some inland
lakes. To date it has not spread to Lake Superior. It has caused
fish kills in the Great Lakes and inland lakes waters where it is present.
Once it enters a body of water, it cannot be removed. You can be a
part of the solution - all watercraft (including jet skis) leaving a lake
should be disinfected. The simple step of disinfecting your boat will
help stop the spread of the VHS virus to other lakes.
A 1% solution of Virkon Aquatic is a very effective disinfectant.
Place one tablet in the sprayer provided. Add one gallon of water and
shake. Then follow the directions below. Do not handle the
tablet with your bare hands, use the tongs provided.
Disinfection directions:
- Remove all organic materials (vegetation, unused bait, etc.) from
the boat, trailer and bait well, and place in the trash.
- Move the "trailered" boat to a location away from the launch ramp.
Do not disinfect a watercraft in or near a body of water.
- Drain the bilge water, live wells, and pumps on the land away from
the launch ramp.
- Turn the motor over several times to remove water from the cooling
system.
- Spray the Virkon solution on the hull, bilge area, live bait well,
trailer, and engine water intakes/exhausts.
- Let drip for 5-10 minutes, and you are good to go.
Virkon Aquatic kills VHS virus, is approved by the U. S. Environmental
Protection Agency, and is environmentally safe. For more information
